Forgiveness in Painful Contract Endings
Forgiveness is one of the most underestimated yet powerful keys for moving forward after painful and unfair contract endings. While such moments can leave leaders and professionals feeling betrayed or undervalued, learning to forgive is not primarily about the other party — it is about keeping your own heart free, soft, and alive.
The Bible reminds us: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26, NKJV). And again, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23, NKJV). Without forgiveness, bitterness hardens our hearts and blocks the very flow of life and creativity we need for the next season.
Why Forgiveness Matters Professionally
Forgiveness is not only a spiritual principle; it has tangible implications in leadership and organizational life. Studies show that 57% of employees leave companies because of their manager, not the job itself (Gallup). Many of these exits are marked by resentment, unresolved conflict, and wounds that leaders carry into their next assignment. Without forgiveness, people often repeat cycles of mistrust and conflict, limiting growth and flourishing.
Jesus Himself made forgiveness non-negotiable: “If you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” (Matthew 6:15, NKJV). The impact of unforgiveness reaches far beyond a single workplace; it shapes our future, our leadership, and even our spiritual authority.
A Personal Story of Forgiveness
I, Ebony Fagbuyi, Founder of KingMaker Advisory™, have walked through such a season. A team I once served with turned against me, with colleagues and a leader acting unjustly and painfully. In prayer, God gave me a surprising and humbling instruction for my last day at work: buy each of them a gift and write a personal note highlighting what I valued in them during the time we worked together.
This was not natural, it was only possible through the Holy Spirit. But that act of radical forgiveness unlocked healing, restored my joy, and freed me to step boldly into the next season. It was less about them and more about keeping my own heart aligned with God’s Kingdom principles.
Spoiler alert: Just a few weeks later, God opened a new door. I stepped into a better position within the same building, but with the company’s European equivalent. I received the same pay for half the hours, enjoyed a breathtaking view over the city, built new friendships, introduced prayer into my workplace, traveled across Europe, and much more.
It was the perfect transition, God’s way of showing me that forgiveness unlocks His best. And it became the final step before stepping into the greatest endeavor of my life at that time: building my own business.
